October 2026 Newsletter: Showing up for the River

This October, we’re asking what it means to show up for the Mississippi River. It can look like learning how what we do on the land shapes the water, gathering with neighbors, speaking up to the people who make decisions, and voting. However you take action, you’re part of a community of 20,000+ River Citizens working together in care for the River’s people, land, water, and wildlife.

In this issue:

  • Take your care for the River to the polls: Election Day is Tuesday, November 3. Look up your ballot, find your polling place, and get nonpartisan info on who’s running at Vote411.org, then count your vote as one of our 10 Actions to Create a Healthier Mississippi River.
  • State legislators talk River health and resilience: Our recap from the Mississippi River Legislative Caucus in Jackson and Vicksburg, MS, where 20-plus state legislators explored regenerative agriculture, flood mitigation, nature-based solutions, and post-Sackett clean water protections.
  • What does it mean to be an impactful River Citizen? Barry Drazkowski of the Izaak Walton League takes a watershed view of the Upper Mississippi, from a century of River management to the Mississippi River Restoration and Resilience Initiative (MRRRI), in a Watershed Talk hosted by the Iowa Division of the Izaak Walton League.
  • Support the River in style: Our One Mississippi t-shirt is soft, stylish, ideal for birding, and free with a donation of $100 or more.
